Wicked: For Good - Exploring Ellis Island Connections

As movie-goers flock to see Wicked: For Good and the pink and green phenomenon takes center stage yet again, here at the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, we’ve found some fun facts featuring those who brought this story to the big screen. Read on to learn more about the Ellis Island connections of Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, and composer Stephen Schwartz, all thanks to our incredible research team at the Family History Center on Ellis Island.

Ariana Grande

One of the biggest names attached to the film, Ariana Grande, has a direct connection to Ellis Island. Born in Boca Raton, Florida, Grande rose to stardom on Nickelodeon for her work on Victorious. Since then, she has become one of the biggest artists in the world, receiving numerous accolades over the years. With Italian heritage on both sides of her family, her maternal great-grandmother, Filomena Gigante, immigrated through Ellis Island in 1898 with her parents and siblings. They came from the town of San Fele and travelled to the States on the SS Patria. To view this manifest, enter 603037100081 into our Passenger Search

Jeff Goldblum

Icon, Jeff Goldblum, also has an immigrant connection. Known for his quirky nature, Goldblum began his career on the stage in NY before moving to film where he appeared in some of the biggest blockbusters of the 90s, including Jurassic Park and Independence Day. Born in 1952, Goldblum grew up in a Jewish family just outside of Pittsburgh. His grandfather, Joseph Goldblum, formerly Powarczik, immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1911. He sailed on the SS Rhein and arrived in Baltimore.

Stephen Schwartz

Legendary lyricist composer, Stephen Schwartz, known for his work on The Prince of Egypt, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and most famously, Wicked, appears in our database for a 1951 trip abroad. Born in 1948 to Sheila Lorna and Stanley Leonard Schwartz, both of Jewish descent, Schwartz studied piano and composition at the Julliard School of Music before earning a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. In 1951, he and his parents passed through the Port of New York returning from a trip abroad. They sailed on the SS Liberte from Le Havre.
