Throughout the day, visitors to Liberty Island enjoyed an array of musical talents:

• The American Symphony Orchestra’s concertmaster Cyrus Beroukhim (violin), Robert Zubrycki (violin), Will Frampton (viola), and Jordan Enzinger (cello) performed three of France’s great string quartets – by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Germaine Tailleferre.
• Contemporary brass ensemble TILT Brass performed excerpts from Eugène Bozza’s Sonatine for brass quintet and Pierre Boulez’s Initiale for 7 brass instruments.
• Flutist Kim Lewis played the classic solo work Density 21.5 by Edgard Varèse.
• An octet led by conductor Kyle Ritenauer performed Varèse’s Octandre, featuring Kim Lewis (flute), Timothy Hommowun (oboe), Yan Liu (clarinet), Joel Rodeback (horn), Tylor Thomas (bassoon), Ariel Shores (trumpet), Johannes Pfannkuch (trombone), and Dylan Holly (double bass).
• Randy Stein, a founding member of the Big Apple Circus, performed classic French songs by Edith Piaf and others on the English concertina.

With Lower Manhattan as a backdrop, Ellis Island provided a breathtaking venue for vocal and instrumental performances:

• A cappella group Voxtet’s repertoire ranged from the Renaissance to the present, and all without a conductor. Joined by voice program directors Dr. Lauren Fowler-Calisto and Dr. Christopher Herbert, these students from the William Paterson University Music Department performed works by Gombert, Clemens, and Josquin.
• Led by composer, trombonist, and concert producer Chris McIntyre, contemporary brass ensemble TILT Brass recreated its Liberty Island performance for visitors to Ellis Island, as well as passing boats sailing along the Hudson River.
• Ellis Island immigrant Edgard Varèse, who emigrated from France to the United States in 1915, was honored with two performances including Kyle Ritenauer conducting Octandre and flutiest Kim Lewis closing out the Make Music Day celebration with the classic solo work Density 21.5.
