How Should I Use Search Results?

The "Matching Passenger Records" list displays information on passengers matching the Passenger Search Profile on the left. The list may be divided into "Exact Matches," "Close Matches," and "Alternate Spellings." Click "More" for any category to see results of only that kind

What Types of Results Are There?

The "Exact Matches" list shows names that exactly match the current Passenger Search Profile. The "Close Matches Only" list shows names that closely match the current Passenger Search Profile. The "Alternate Spellings Only" list shows up to 25 alternate spellings for the current Passenger Search Profile.

What Are Close Matches and Alternate Spellings?

If you're having trouble finding your passenger, explore "Close Matches" and "Alternate Spellings."

Close Matches begin with the same letters as the name you entered. Sometimes the passenger record you're looking will be found under one of these matches.

Alternate Spellings of names can be surprisingly varied—and many of the alternatives would be hard to guess at. ("Smmith" or "Smnith" for "Smith," or "Hillenborg" for "Hallenberg.") To aid your search, we've developed a powerful software tool for finding alternate names. Relying on advanced forms of math, computer science, and phonetics, the tool combs the millions of records in the archives and returns spellings that you might not have considered. (We also rate the alternatives for closeness to the original name.) Sometimes the passenger record you're looking for will be found under one of these unexpected names.

What Is the Passenger Search Profile?

The Passenger Search Profile (to the left of the "Matching Passenger Records" list) shows the information you entered about the passenger. We used this information as our search criteria.

To refine your search, click "Edit" for any category on the Profile; then change or add information and search again.

What If There Are Too Many Results?

You need to narrow down your search. Click "Edit" for a category in the Profile; then add or change information.

What If There Are No Matching Records?

If there are no matching records after you first enter the passenger name, you'll be given a chance to search for alternate spellings of the name. (To learn more about alternate spellings, see "What Are Close Matches and Alternate Spellings?")

If you receive no matching records after refining your search, click "Undo Last Change"—you'll be returned to your most recent list of Matching Passenger Records.
