What Are Close Matches and Alternate Spellings?
If you're having trouble finding your passenger, explore "Close Matches" and "Alternate Spellings."
Close Matches begin with the same letters as the name you entered. Sometimes the passenger record you're looking
will be found under one of these matches.
Alternate Spellings of names can be surprisingly variedand many of the alternatives would be hard to
guess at. ("Smmith" or "Smnith" for "Smith," or "Hillenborg" for "Hallenberg.") To aid your search,
we've developed a powerful software tool for finding alternate names. Relying on advanced forms of
math, computer science, and phonetics, the tool combs the millions of records in the archives
and returns spellings that you might not have considered. (We also rate the alternatives for
closeness to the original name.) Sometimes the passenger record you're looking for will be
found under one of these unexpected names.
