Story: Ellis Island a faint memory, but still a memory.

We came to America December 1950 from Germany after my father, the Baron Alexander von Meyer, died in 1948. His mother, Georgianna Ives, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the famed clockmakerprint family. My mom wanted to come to this country of freedom. She once was with Ringling Brothers Circus and familiar with the U.S.

It took us two years to qualify to come to this country. So that we would not be a ward of the state, we had a sponsor in California.

On a grey, misty and foggy morning, standing on the deck of the ship, seeing Ellis Island and the Statue Of Liberty, my mother said, "Don't ever forget this day." She said the same thing when we boarded the ship SS Washington in Hamburg on a eerie silent dark morning. I have never forgotten either events. Years later seeing a documentary on Ellis Island, I realized this was the place we came to...the inside of the building gave me a flashback, a floodgate of memories, the stairs, the balcony looking down at all those people, standing in line with our trunk and baggage.

Driving through New York we looked at all the tall buildings in amazement. We went to Long Island for a few days to rest at a friend's house before taking a train to California.

Then I heard of the Wall of Honor, and I purchased name plaques for my mom, sister and myself, as well for my husband's parents who came from Puerto Rico and Hawaii.

In my life here in America I have accomplished many things, including my Art and being the "Sun-Maid Raisin Girl" on the box, as seen since 1970 till now. I am a proud American, married to a decorated Vietnam Veteran, and have two beautiful daughters that have accomplished lives. And to say I am a proud American is an understatement.
