Celebrates Lady Liberty’s 120TH Anniversary

New York, NY (October 2006) – October 28, 2006 marks the 120th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty’s unveiling and dedication in New York Harbor. In celebration of this historic milestone, The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation has announced a “Statue of Liberty Picture Contest” for children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.

Lady Liberty is our most powerful symbol of freedom, opportunity and the American Dream. Since 1886 she has welcomed millions of immigrants to America’s shores and remains an inspiration to those arriving today to begin a new life in the land of the free. Across the generations immigrants have shared their stories of arrival and memories of the Statue with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation invites all elementary school children grades K-5 to use this beloved icon as an inspiration for a drawing. Each entry must be created on a standard 8.5-inch by 11-inch sheet of paper (either landscape or portrait orientation). The drawing must be an original artwork and may not be a copy of another person’s photograph, poster, drawing or other image. Drawings can be created with pencil, pen, marker, crayon, or any other drawing instruments. Only one entry per child will be permitted. In addition to receiving prizes, the finalists and winners will have their drawings featured on

The contest will run from October 12, 2006 through January 31, 2007. All submissions must be made under a parent or guardian’s supervision with the completed entry form and mailed to:
