THE STATUE OF LIBERTY-ELLIS ISLAND FOUNDATION AND
AMERICA ONLINE ANNOUNCE ALLIANCE TO PROVIDE ONLINE GENEALOGY RESOURCES TO MILLIONS
OF CONSUMERS
Agreement Includes America
Online's Sponsorship Of American Family Immigration History Center™ At Ellis
Island; Integration of Foundation's Content Across Multiple America Online
Brands
New York and Dulles,
VA--January 28, 2002 - The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation,
Inc. and America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company,
today announced a new alliance to provide online genealogy resources to millions
of consumers.
Under the agreement, AOL will become the exclusive Internet
service provider sponsor of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation's
American Family Immigration History Center™ at Ellis Island. In addition,
consumers will now be able to access the Foundation's history-making Web site,
ellisisland.org, across multiple America Online brands, including the AOL
service, Netscape and CompuServe. The site, accessible at AOL Keyword:
EllisIsland.org and via the genealogy and education areas of these online
services, includes an online document database where users can explore their
family immigration histories.
The integration of the ellisisland.org
content will significantly enhance the genealogy resources offered across AOL,
CompuServe and Netscape. Users can trace family roots, view an immigration
timeline, build a family scrapbook, read immigration stories and even prepare
for a visit to Ellis Island. The American Family Immigration History Center™ and
Web site represent significant milestones for the millions of Americans
currently interested in family history research. They offer, for the first
time, easy access to immigration information about the 22 million people who
entered America through the Port of New York and Ellis Island between
1892-1924--the largest human migration in modern history.
"We are
extremely grateful for the promotional support America Online brings to our
project," said Stephen A. Briganti, President and CEO of The Statue of
Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. "We are pleased to extend our online resources
to AOL and CompuServe members and Netscape users--many of whom will be pleased
to find their ancestral records in our database."
Katherine Borsecnik,
President, AOL Brand Management & Programming, said, "We are proud to be
associated with an organization that provides such a valuable resource to the
public. More and more of those researching their family roots use online
resources, which makes AOL a natural fit as the exclusive ISP sponsor for the
Center and makes the Foundation's extensive genealogy database a valued addition
to our content offerings."
The ellisisland.org site was rated "Top
Newcomer" by Jupiter Metrix upon its launch in April. At that time, Ellis Island
and ellisisland.org ranked in the top five most-searched terms on AOL. In less
than nine months since its launch, the site has generated more than 2 billion
hits.
America Online joins the Foundation's existing sponsors including
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Discover Card, Genealogy.com,
Eastman Kodak Company, Compaq Computer Corporation and Oracle Corporation.
