HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL ELLISISLAND.ORG REACHES OVER 3 BILLION HITS –
EXPANDS WITH EXCITING NEW FEATURES
New York, NY (October 2002) – The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. has announced that its history making Web site – www.ellisisland.org – has now generated over 3 billion hits in its first eighteen months of operation.
The official Web site of the American Family Immigration History Center™ offers easy access to the immigration information on the 22 million people who entered America through the Port of New York and Ellis Island between 1892-1924. Forty percent of Americans can trace their roots back to at least one ancestor whose records are included in this database.
Hailed as one of the biggest launches in Internet history, the site quickly assumed the #1 spot on Lycos and stayed in the Lycos Top 50 for six weeks. It was rated as a “Top Newcomer” by Jupiter Media Metrix and noted as a significant event in “Google’s 2001 Zeitgeist Annual Review,” along with garnering thousands of print and broadcast stories, making it one of the most popular destinations on the Internet. To accommodate the tremendous amount of traffic, the Foundation has made significant changes to the site, increasing the servers’ capacity to optimize its functionality and improve accessibility. In addition, the site design has been streamlined and simplified to allow for easier and faster navigation.
For the very first time on the Internet, www.ellisisland.org’s e-commerce launch allows millions of visitors who successfully locate their family immigration records to purchase actual copies of their ancestor’s original ship’s passenger manifest, as well as a picture of the ship which carried their ancestor to America. Both are reproduced on archival quality paper. There are over 3 ˝ million manifest pages available on the site, as well as images of over 800 passenger ships.
"We have been gratified by the tremendous initial and ongoing interest in ellisisland.org,” said Stephen A. Briganti, President and CEO of The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. “We have worked diligently to improve the site and are pleased to offer these new features that make it an even more valuable resource for researching and preserving family history."
